New Iowa DNR Trout Stream Maps

Our good fishing buddy has done a great job updating the Iowa DNR  website.  They now  have a lot of great information on the streams in Iowa.  Check it out.

Drys

It was another great day of fly fishing.  This morning we found fish feeding on the surface as early as 8:30 so we made the switch from nymphs to the 18 adams.  Long casts into tight spots helped us with our success.

This has been a great summer of fly fishing in Northeast Iowa.  The water levels have stayed up and the trout seems healthy.  If you have not been on the streams this summer make sure to plan a trip for the fall.  It seems like it will be a good one.

Dry Flies

August is coming to a close but we just had a great weekend on the water.  The water level is still good on the streams for being the end of the summer and the fish were very active.

The mornings have been cool here in Northeast Iowa so we did not see many fish rising until 10 so we stuck to the nymphs and emergers until we saw a few rises.  As soon as the fish started to rise we switched over to a size 18 Adams with success.

Once afternoon hit we switched back to nymphs and fished the faster water looking for the browns.  We were just passing the time until the sun had heated up the valley so we could start casting grasshoppers.  We had good luck fishing the grass banks and slack water next to the faster runs.

I am looking forward to fall and the cooler weather.

“First Timers”

Northeast Iowa is fishing better then ever.  Even though the weather has been extremely warm, there has still been great bug life and active fishing around the streams.  The water is at perfect levels on most streams and you find fish active everywhere.  Today a father and son duo took up the sport of fly fishing for the first time.  They learned how to cast, read water, and rig their rod.  They did an excellent job for first timers.   The duo each caught a Brookie, Brown, and Rainbow trout on the stream.  The Dad had a “Triple Crown” on the day, while the Son started us off with the first 3 fish of the day.  The weather was warm, so most of the day was spent working the riffles at low depths.  If your looking to fish the Northeast Iowa area this is the time to do it.

Thanks Dan

Iowa Trout Map

I just picked up the new Iowa Trout Map.  Big improvement from the old ones.  Lots of good info and pictures.  There is even a picture of me in the map this year.  That was a nice rainbow caught on a streamer, it had some nice color.

Great Day Fly Fishing

Fished the North Bear today.  Great fishing, weather and water.  The fish were very active and loving the Pheasant Tail.  As the water warmed, the bugs began to fly and the fish began to rise.  Most people would switch over to the dry fly, but I didn’t.  Not sure what that says about me, but when you find this many bugs under one rock it’s hard to stop nymphing.  If I’m having success it’s hard to switch over to the dry.  The fish were rising and the bugs were on the water, but I just could not make the switch.  All in all, it was a great day of fly fishing and the run off from the snow melt has been steady and slow.  That may change this weekend with higher temps and rain coming our way.  There is still a lot of snow on the North facing hills, so if that rain comes, things could get muddy.

Unlike Ethan’s trip on Saturday, I was not alone today.  A good number of people were out fishing/camping today.  It was nice to see so many people enjoying the trout fishing in Northeast Iowa.

November 8th

Well the football season has ended and I haven’t seen the river since August.  So I was looking forward to getting back out there and casting my rod.  What a great day of fishing.  November and the weather is outstanding.  It was about 63 degrees  and not a cloud in the sky.  The water conditions were clear, however the water was low.  I fished most of the day with size 18 Hare’s ear and PT.  I was not in the mood for many changes in attack, but they did me well on the day.  I caught about 15 fish on the day, two very nice Browns (16inch and 19inch).   I had a shore lunch on one of my favorite Rocks and just enjoyed a great day in November.  Yes 6o degrees in November and still fishing well.  The great thing about fishing the driftless area is that you can fish year round and run into days like this.   However, I do look forward to the winter fishing come this December and January – if you are willing to bundle up and brave the elements you can have lots of fishing days with solitude and find the fishing to be excellent.  I look forward to catching more fish soon, real soon.

November 5th

It sounds like it’s going to be a very nice weekend in Northeast Iowa.  The water is a little low but it is fishing well.  Warm weather and sunshine this weekend.  We don’t have to many of these left so try to get some fly fishing in this weekend.

October 24th

Fly fishing in Northeast Iowa at the end of October can be a coin toss sometimes, depending on the weather.  Chris and Eddie picked the day a month in advance and ended up with great weather.  The sky was overcast but it was warm and calm.

Chris grew up fly fishing for salmon but now that he lives in Iowa, he took this opportunity to come to Decorah and get back to his fly rod, this time for trout.  For some people like Chris it’s just like riding a bike.  He was back in the zone in no time.

Eddie was ready to give fly fishing in Northeast Iowa a shot.  He fished his home state of North Carolina quite often and found the streams around Northeast Iowa similar to the mountain streams he fishes.

We were fishing just under the surface.  The fish were active, and we landed numerous fish with emerges and bead heads size 16-20.  Eddie was successful fishing a sausage and egg combination.  He chose to leave out the sausage (aka, San Juan Worm) and went with a red copper john instead.

Thanks guys.
