We have gotten a lot of rain the past week but it seems that most of the streams in the area are fishing well. There were a good number of people fishing on North and South Bear this morning. The water is a little high for this time of year and a little off color but the fish were active. I talked to a few people who fished Coldwater Creek this weekend and they said it was very high and dirty.
Fall is a great time to get out and fly fish some new water. Iowa trout fishing never closes so get out and fish. Catch and release fly fishing is very important in the fall. The brown trout are spawning so let’s keep the population strong.
What is the fishing like in the winter? I’ve never fly fished in the winter and thought it might be a fun way to break up the winter after hunting season.
Winter fly fishing can be fun and a little challenging. The good thing is that you are fishing. Two challenges: 1) the cold weather, and 2) ice building up on your rod and line. The fish are feeding but they are a lot less active. Size 20-22 midge patterns with 7x line work well in the winter.
If you’re up for the challenge, you should give it a try.
